SC State Golfers Capture Black College Invite at Atlanta

Medalist Hector Arroyave

ATLANTA, GA – The South Carolina State men's golf team captured the team title at the Black College Invitational Golf Tournament at Brown Mill's Golf Course Sunday, carding a 36-hole total of 575 (289-286) to edge defending champion Bethune-Cookman by one stroke, the same margin the Bulldogs held over the Wildcats after the opening round Saturday.

Both teams had identical team totals of 286 on Sunday, however, SC State's 289 on Saturday to the Wildcats' 290 made the difference. B-CU finished with a two-day total of 576 (290-286) in the twelve-team field.

Junior Hector Arroyave of Celaya, Mexico, carded a 4-under par 68 Sunday after an opening round 3-under 69 for a 36-hole total of (69-38) 137 -- 7-under par -- to spearhead the Bulldogs and capture medalist honors.

SC State won its first title under first-year head coach Herman Belton, who is also in his third season as women's coach at SC State.

Senior Robert Biggers of Orlando was also impressive for SC State with a 36-hole total of (72-70) 142, 2 under par. Trailing him were sophomore John Jones of North Augusta at (72-77) at 149, and freshmen Alex Bernadini of Morelos, Mexico, who carded a (81-71) 152, and Roberto Cacho, also of Morelos, Mexico,  at (77-79) 156.

The Bulldogs, who will play a five-match fall schedule, return to the links Oct. 24 at the Bethune-Cookman Invitational in Daytona Beach.
